Did Robert Winfield really marry three times?! Did he suffer the deaths of three family members within days? Several hours were spent doubting these events; however, the records documented them. All these events were recorded for the parish of Ockbrook and they help explain the difficulty in finding many children of record begotten by Robert. We know he was first married to a woman name Sarah whose maiden name has not yet been found as of this writing. We know this by the mention of her given name in the baptismal record of her three children. Three burial records were found for Sarah and two of her three children (Mary and Sarah on the SAME PAGE of the parish register. They all died within days of each other in the year 1681. What happened? Were they the victims of an epidemic or accident? The marriage license for Robert and his second wife Elizabeth Burch was found dated 3 April 1684: It was obtained in Lichfield and the marriage took place in Ockbrook. 17 days later (20 April 1684) Sarah Burch was buried. Indeed the burial of Elizabeth, the wife of Robert Winfield, is recorded in the Ockbrook parish register. The following January (1685) Robert married Sarah Burch, a likely sister to Elizabeth, in Ockbrook which is recorded in the parish register. The only known child of this union was for son Robert born 4 years later in 1690. The remaining question is when Robert or Sarah Burch died.
